The Committee meet this day at the request of the Acting Colonial Secretary.

The Minutes of the last Meeting, held on the 17th instant, are read and confirmed.

(1.) Read a Minute by His Excellency the Officer Administering the Government, referring for consideration an application from the Director of the Observatory for an additional Chinese Clerk.

The Committee, before coming to a decision, wish to be furnished with a detailed statement of the daily work done at the Observatory, and its distribution among the staff.

(2.) Read a Minute by His Excellency the Officer Administering the Government, recommending a vote of $950 to enable the Sanitary Board to pay the expenses incurred in suppressing the recent Cattle epidemic.

The Committee find that the amount is made up of the following items:---

Disinfection and burial of carcases, $ 80.00 Disinfection of Cow-houses, 150.00 Destruction of suspected fodder, 130.00 Removal and destruction of suspected manure and litter, 84.00 Matsheds for segregation of Cattle, 470.00 Miscellaneous, 36.00 $950.00

The Committee recommend that the sum, which appears to be reasonable, should be voted.

(3.) Read a Minute by His Excellency the Officer Administering the Government, recommending a vote of $90 as salary at $10 per month from April 1st to December 31st, 1886, for a Chinese Teacher for the Officers of the Gaol.

The Committee find that 18 Officers of the Gaol have signified their intention to attend a Chinese class, and are of opinion that, for various reasons, it is desirable that the Officers of the Prison should be encouraged to acquire a knowledge of Chinese colloquial.

The Committee therefore recommend that the amount, which is the usual salary paid for a Chinese Teacher, be voted.

The Committee adjourn sine die.

Read and confirmed this 7th day of April, 1886.
